The machines that transform wind energy in a usable one are called wind turbines or generators, and its
power ranges from a few watts to megawatts. The main generated energy is mechanical, but it can be
transformed to electrical with a gearbox and an electrical generator.
Wind systems available commercially at present are reliable intermediate size two or three blades
horizontal axis turbines, with rotors diameters in the range of 30 to 60 meters and with power ratings in
the range 300 to 1 500 kW. They are cost competitive if operated under the most suitable wind regime.
